Two cops accused of extortion
Two police officers attached to the Belize City Traffic Branch are tonight being sought on charges of Extortion. This follows a report made this afternoon by Jovanni Requeña, who said he was stopped during a traffic inspection around midnight on Thursday. Requeña alleges that when Corporal Orvin Tejeda and a Constable Leonardo observed that he was driving his vehicle without a valid license or insurance, they tried to strike a bargain. He said the officers told him that if he paid them six hundred dollars they could make the charges of Driving Without a License and Driving Without Valid Insurance disappear. The driver said he gave the officers what he had, one hundred dollars. But it appears that Requeña had a change of heart and today chose to report the matter to the authorities.
