Flowers Bank Road flooded

Since the passage of Tropical Storm Matthew, various parts of the country, primarily the west and central regions, flooded.  A News Five team encountered a flooded road when we visited Flowers Bank on Tuesday and a river that had risen about twenty feet above its normal level.  Gonguez says the flooding will last for another few days, and will also affect some parts of Belize City.

Dennis Gonguez

“There are lots of water stored in the Crooked Tree Lagoon at this time and eventually that water is expected to enter into the Belize River and head out through the Haulover Creek.”

Marion Ali

“Ok, so Belize City is yet to see the effects of that flooding and north of Belize City?”

Dennis Gonguez

“Well what happened, the levels have reached a steady height at this time and there won’t be any rises because there are no further inputs into the river.  We don’t expect any new rains in the near future so the levels will be steady.  So what we’ll see now is a leveling off of the Belize River flow. We should see those water heading towards the mouth of the Haulover Creek at a steady pace. There’s a possibility that some of the low-lying areas, such as Belama will see, especially if the crest reaches during a high tide then we could see some yards being inundated.”

Gonguez also advises everyone to be prepared for any threats of new storms, since we are still in the hurricane season.
