WISH hands out 200 school kits to needy kids
It’s back to school for children of primary and high schools countrywide and to help with a smooth transition, the Women Inspired to Serve and Help are rendering assistance to kids of less fortunate families. Today, members of the WISH Foundation distributed over two hundred back to school kits to students of the Primary schools in More Tomorrow, Hattieville, and Independence Villages. News Five caught up with WISH at the Hattieville Primary School.

Children were happy and all smiles when we visited the Hattieville Primary School. An involved group of women were here to distribute a healthy package of school supplies.

“Basically what we started off to do is to help children across the country of Belize in whatever way we can—educationally and recreationally—because we know that it is important for them to learn in school and to have their school supplies that they need. But we also want to make sure that they have fun like take them to the zoo and take them to the park and do some more recreational activities.”
The school, which hosts fifty five students, is more than grateful for the timely donation coming at the beginning of the school year.

“We are most fortunate and grateful for it in that parents are finding it very difficult to provide basic needs for their children. So with this little assistance, it will be of great help. Just this morning for instance, a parent said Miss; my child will not be able to come in today because ih no have ih school bag, ih books, ih so forth. So it’s a little help that will go a long way for some parents.”
The WISH Foundation says it will follow up the progress of the schools they are currently assisting.

“We’re actually doing a lot. We just started out so no body had heard about us. But in addition to this project, what we wanted to do is to make it a continuous project. Once we come to the schools and distribute the packages, we wanted to make sure that there would be some sort of continuous effort on our part to help these kids. So after we distribute these packages this year, we’re gonna follow their grades for the rest of this year and next year bring back the packages and those students who get on the honour roll in schools will be able to get a little bonus in their packages and the student from the school who performs the best is going to be included in our full scholarship programme which leads us into what else you guys can expect from us.”

WISH Foundation has been functioning since April of this year and is currently sponsoring two students with full scholarships: Robert Flowers of Queen Square Anglican Primary School in Belize City and Isabel Simpson of State Nazarene Primary School of the Cayo District. The organization intends to offer ten full scholarships in the 2009 school year.
