Art teacher presents his first exhibit
Turning to the bustling art scene…He says he started dabbling with brushes and paint since childhood, but he has never before mounted an art show – not until today. Art teacher, Kirkland Smith says his first display dubbed, “First Works”, consist of many pieces that were inspired by his students at Saint John’s College.
Kirkland Smith, Artist
“With the students’ work, students are required to do so many kinds of projects and I think what really inspired this art show would be my students. For many years I’ve been teaching and my students have always asked “Sir, you are an art teacher but we’ve never seen anything from you.” That’s one reason why I think this art show is important. You will see mostly acrylic and canvas, definitely some oil paintings, as well as drawings and ceramics and some prints.”

“And some of the influences, as you see influences of Dali, what other influences are there that we can see?”
Kirkland Smith
“I think it would be a variety because Carl influences my work aside from Dali. It’s more like looking at the works of other artist and then also trying to produce my own style of work.”
The exhibition is taking place for a few weeks at the Image Factory on North Front Street in Belize City. So if you can’t catch the opening tonight, you still have time to view Smith’s pieces.
