SIB celebrates Caribbean Statistics Day by giving back to the community

Representatives from the Statistical Institute of Belize usually come knocking at your door to collect data. Well, the roles were reversed today when the SIB employees made their rounds to assist the community in observation of Caribbean Statistics Day. Across the region, events were held to highlight the importance of statistics, but SIB decided to engage the staff members in a day of community service. News Five met them at their third stop, the HelpAge Center in Belize City, where they handed over a much needed gift.

“This is the second time we are celebrating Caribbean Statistics Day and we thought that we, as the Statistical Institute of Belize, we go to the community to get data so that we can disseminate data. We decided to go back to the community and give community service. We decided on three different institutions; the Golden Haven Rest Home in Hattieville where we did some minor repairs to the building, we entertained the elderly and we also gave personal care items. This morning we were at the Dorothy Menzies Child Care Center where we did the same thing. We did minor building repairs, we entertained the children and we gave out toys.

Here at the HelpAge Center we are donating four ceiling fans to the Bernice York Activity Center. Here they have activities almost every day of the week; scheduled activities for the elderly and of course the room tends to get hot. They have between twenty and thirty elderly there almost on a daily basis so they definitely need the fans and that’s where we stepped in. It is well received. This is the third year in a row, we’ve done community service and everyone looks forward to it. The staff appreciates giving back to the community so it’s well received among our staff.”

“And you also have something planned for World Statistics Day?”

Arreini Palacio Morgan

“Yes, we do have something planned for World Statistics Day. We are going to do exhibitions in the libraries in each of our districts. We will display statistics and have people come in and learn more about the Statistical Institute of Belize and what we do.”

World Statistics Day will be observed on October twentieth when SIB will be conducting an education campaign.
