High School marches to make Society aware of Drug Abuse
Close to a hundred students from Excelsior High School held a drug awareness parade in Belize City this morning. The event marked the start of a week of activities and according to the principal and students, the parade was aimed to do more than just march around town carrying banners and beating drums. It sent a message about the ravages of drug use and its impact on the crime situation.
Gail Thompson, Principal, Excelsior High School
“The parade is just to send the message and for them themselves to realize that drugs are harmful and they did get something out of the parade. This morning we had an opening ceremony where the director of NDACC, Mister Vellos, spoke to them about the harmful effects of drugs and the support that NDACC offers to students who need.”
“Statistics shows that number of primary and high school students now are taking even if it is legal drugs are taking drugs. Do you think that something like a parade is effective enough in getting across that message to those who are on chemicals?”
Gail Thompson
“The parade and other activities because the parade today is only the start of the week. We have an entire week of activities where they will get lectures, they will have program and we will culminate with a fair where different service organizations will come in and demonstrate what their services are. So this parade today is only the start of the drug awareness week. So we do believe that it has an impact on them.”
Shantel Card, Student, Excelsior High School
“It’s better not to be under the influence of drugs cause it really takes us really different. And our country is really going to a bad place right now so let’s all be drug free.”
Sharon Wade, Student, Excelsior High School
“To me the best way to ketch the youth’s their mind is within music and the most thing is to try to talk to them into going to church and try to turn their life to God.”
Jacinto Luna, Student, Excelsior High School
“I try talk to my friend they mek they stay above the influence of drugs and alcohol noh. So they could try outcome their fear fi try stop smoke it or drink alcohol and their drugs noh.”
Marion Ali
“You know it’s addictive though—drugs very addictive. So what in addition to a parade do you think needs to be done?”
“I know it wah hard, but I think dehn need fi try get the big drug dealers dehn or as they call them cartel from off the street, then I think Belize will be a peaceful and better place.”
Excelsior High School has held a number of events to discourage drug-use in the past.
