Herman Miranda charged with murder
In the Magistrate’s Court today, police charged a man in connection with the gruesome murder earlier this week of thirty six year old Norman Gillett. The Vernon Street resident was gunned down on the compound of House of Commons around eight on Tuesday night. The alleged gunman, twenty one year old Herman Miranda Junior, lives around the corner from where the incident occurred. Police say he later handed over two guns to them, and they have discovered that one of the weapons was stolen three years ago from businessman, Evan Tench, the owner of Tenchtronics on Amara Avenue. Tench had reported his licensed Glock nine millimeter pistol stolen during a burglary at his business place. This afternoon, Miranda appeared before Chief Magistrate, Margaret Gabb-McKenzie where he was read five charges. Those include one count of murder, one count of handling stolen goods, two counts of kept unlicensed firearms and one count of kept unlicensed ammunition. Miranda was remanded to prison until November third. He was picked up shortly after the shooting and was found with two live rounds of nine millimeter ammunitions in his front right pants pocket. On Wednesday morning, Miranda appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court and pleaded guilty for keeping unlicensed ammunition. He was sentenced to two years in jail, effective September twenty ninth. Police say they arrested Miranda after he fitted the description of the man who was seen fleeing the shooting scene.
