Three weekend traffic accidents; one dead
Three separate traffic accidents on Saturday have left one man dead and three others injured. Around a quarter to five on Saturday, a collision on the Western Highway claimed the life of forty-three year old Delroy Gentle Vernon. Police reports are that a bus from the national Transport fleet, driven by Sandro Salazar, and a Honda Accord, with Michael Gillett behind the wheel, were travelling in the same direction towards Belmopan City. But when they reached between miles forty-three and forty-four, the bus allegedly stopped and Gillett swerved left into the oncoming traffic and collided head on into Vernon’s Toyota Corolla. Vernon, his passenger Aaron Hyde, and Gillett were all transported to the Western Regional Hospital. However, Vernon succumbed to his injures.
The two other accidents were not fatal and Police investigations reveal that after one a.m. between miles sixty-seven and sixty-eight on the Southern Highway, twenty-five year old traffic warden Andrew Diego was driving a Toyota Hilux when upon reaching Golden Stream Village, Diego lost control of the vehicle. The pickup overturned several times before coming to rest with its four wheels in the air. Both Diego and his passenger, thirty-two year old Anita Coc were trapped inside and had to be freed with the assistance of nearby villagers. Both victims were taken to the Southern Regional Hospital, but while Coc received bruises to her right arm, Diego had a cut wound to the forehead and was bleeding from the ear. He was hospitalised in critical condition and was later transferred to the Southern Regional Hospital and then again to the K.H.M.H.
The other incident occurred in San Ignacio. A thirteen year old teen told police that around four-thirty Saturday evening he hitched a ride in the pan of a truck being driven by thirty-nine year old Gilmar Pinelo. According to the boy, he told Pinelo he wanted to get off at Cabbage Bark Street, but the driver didn’t stop and so he jumped out of the vehicle, landing on his back. As a result of the fall, the teen sustained a fractured left hand, scrapes and bruises. Police have served Pinelo with a notice of intended prosecution pending investigations.
