P.M. says there are sanctions for councillor

And the Prime Minister had his own take on the debacle involving the mayor and the Councillor. While Councillor King has been spared for now, his political career is in doubt.

“The undertaking not to go on the media and talk bad about any fellow candidate, the undertaking not to make the sort of allegations that King made is an undertaking that implicitly suggested that if it is if breached, that person who breaches the undertaking will not be countenanced by the party to run in the party’s convention.”

“P.M., do you think that this infighting within the City council will hurt their chances come the election next year?”

Prime Minister Dean Barrow
“I don’t think so. It is messy but democracy is a messy process. I think two things; the mayor obviously is still very popular, individual councillors I think are still very popular. I believe there will be a mixed ticket at the convention. I believe that the people in the city will look at the fact that there is now a U.D.P. central government to assist a next U.D.P. City council and I think that the efforts of the Central Government of transparency, of good governance and proper administration will also play a huge role in the City Council election. So I genuinely think that the U.D.P. will win those elections without any major difficulty.”

“Mr. King mentioned that they have been trying to settle these differences before he chose to speak out. Were you aware that these problems were brewing between the mayor and her councillors?”

Prime Minister Dean Barrow
“Yes, for a while and we’ve made efforts to try and get them to reconcile their difference. By and large in my view, the differences are principally differences of personality and it’s very hard to reconcile differences of personality. We tried, obviously, we failed. Now the people will decide in a convention. Which of these competing personalities are to go forward?”
