Karina Daniels murdered in Orange Walk
This week’s fourth murder was reported in the north early this morning. The nude body of a woman was found in some bushes in the centre of Orange Walk Town. It took hours to determine her identity and this afternoon, police confirmed that she is from Corozal. There are many troubling questions in this brutal homicide and Duane Moody headed north to find answers.
Duane Moody, Reporting
The nude body of the woman was discovered around seven-thirty a.m. by some primary students on their way to school. The body was lying in bushes approximately four yards from the street side in an open lot on North Mejiba Street. Dave Muckay, who lives adjacent to the open lot, says he learnt of the murder this morning.
Dave Muckay, Discovered Body
“Usually every morning I tie my dog on the back of the yard beside where they find the body. So this morning I came and move my dog and grin it to the back and I heard some kids and a young man staring at a body that was in the bushy lot. And I went over to see and apparently it was a woman that had long hair and her head was covered with her underwear and her brassiere was on top of her breast and her private was covered with probably her blouse or some other cloth. It’s shocking because it’s right beside my house and I don’t know what was the motive, but she was found dead this morning.”
Duane Moody
“Was there anything that alerted you or gave you some kinda hint that something was going on outside?”
Dave Muckay
“Well, I heard the dogs in the morning and like late night, but I didn’t get up and check right because they were not in the yard no, they were beside. But I think it happened late last night.”
Inspector Selvin Tillett, Acting O.C., O.W. Police
“Attempts to try and locate any ID on her resulted fruitless so we don’t know who is this person. We have contacted the community, people came in already, saw the photo but she is not anyone anybody knows at this moment.”
Duane Moody
“I understand you also found marks on her?”
Insp. Selvin Tillett
“Yeah we found marks on her neck. At this moment we cannot say whether it was as a result of her death. But this was the only mark we saw on her body. There are no other marks on her body at this moment.”
But late this afternoon, police investigations revealed that the woman is from San Andres Village in the outskirts of Corozal Town.
Insp. Selvin Tillett
“The female was identified as one Karina Daniels, twenty-nine years of Corozal. At this moment police are looking for one person for questioning in regards to this incident. We requested the assistance of Corozal police who gladly assisted us and gave us up to what we have at this moment.”
According to relatives, Karina was last seen around nine-thirty Thursday night with her common-law husband Carlos Keme who has not been located.
The homicide has left residents of the area in fear.
Eladio Moguel, Resident of North Mejiba Street
“We are afraid then; let’s say it that way. We are no longer safe. The street is abandoned as you can see the light post is covered with bushes, it’s no longer working. The light is on but it’s inefficient. We need another light here. I am always complaining about this bush here. It is a piece of land that has been covered with bush for several years now. So I believe something has to be done man. Somebody has to do something.”
Maria Moguel, Resident of North Mejiba Street
“It’s too dangerous watch the bush, no light on this street. You can’t be safe like that.”
Duane Moody
“You were saying that you guys don’t come out after six?”
Maria Moguel
“No, No because it’s dark, dark. When the town board would pass for the dirt, you come out and throw it; you don’t know who can be here hiding.”
