Chamber of Commerce calls on G.O.B. to review crime strategies
The private sector is weighing in on the seemingly uncontrollable increase in crime and violence that continue to threaten the security of citizens and the business community. A missive from the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry, released today, calls on the Ministry responsible for National Security to tighten up and arrest crime.
According to the Chamber and we quote “these criminal acts of aggression continue to spread unchecked, causing an escalation in security concerns and concerns for personal safety, and thereby lowering the quality of the life of the average law-abiding Belizean citizen to unacceptable levels. The Chamber calls on the Ministry of National Security to review its strategies for dealing with the protection and security of the general public. It also calls on the Minister to employ any measure under the law that would grant citizens the security required while bringing offenders to justice.”
Under public pressure in the face of unprecedented escalation in murders and other criminal acts, Minister Carlos Perdomo took to the airwaves early this week to deflect the public unease and unveiled yet another strategy which simply amounts to the beefing up of the police force. But even as the Minister spoke, an armed robbery was reported in the city followed by a murder on the same night.
