Mariano scores hat trick for B.D.F. big W against Wagiya

Story PictureGood evening I’m James Adderley welcoming you to this edition of Spots Monday.

Week three of the RF&G Cup Tournament brought Wagiya of Dangriga to the M.C.C. Grounds yesterday against the Belize Defence Force and as quick as four minutes in Dennis Serrano unleashes this header that gives the military a 1-zip lead. For its part, Wagiya tries to answer with this long distance delivery but the keeper hangs tough. Dangriga again looks potent with this long range floater that forces the keeper into a big time save. At the forty-first minute Evan Mariano catches up with this pass to score a header that the Griga keeper should have really handled. Instead we have a 2-zip ballgame and Evan Mariano all you need is a partner to appear on Channel Five’s Duets. At the half it’s a 2-nil B.D.F. lead. In second half Wagiya of Dangriga simply collapses against the highly motivated assault of the military. Deon Flowers receives this pass and makes it a 3-zip ballgame. Some three minutes later Evan Mariano beats his man to score his second goal of the match in a 4-nil score. Dangriga then does get this look at goal but they might just need a G.P.S. to find the target. In fact this is Wagiya’s best offensive offering in second half but a diving save by the keeper denies them the consolation goal. And folks, let’s just call Sunday Evan Mariano day because the striker, helped by inept defending, picks up his own rebound to score a hat trick and force a 5-zip final score.

In other results from around the league, Nizhee Corozal continued on its winning ways dumping San Pedro Dolphins 2-1, Sugar Boys Juventus got its first win of the season by jolting Georgetown Ibayani 4-3, Llagulei which means roots rolled to its third straight win with a 4-zip shellacking of Benque DC while the defending champion Hankook Verdes continues to struggle with a 1-1 draw against F.C. Belize on Sunday. Week four’s schedule in the B.P.F.L. finds five Sunday matches. Nizhee Corozal will host F.C. Belize at the Ricalde Stadium. The San Pedro Dolphins travel to Suga Boys Juventus, Wagiya will be hosted out west by Hankook Verdes, Llagulei will battle Georgetown Ibayani at the Carl Ramos Stadium and Benque Viejo D.C. United comes to the M.C.C. Grounds against the Belize Defence Force.

Looking at international football, Hankook Verdes will begin its participation in the 2008 UNCAF Champion Tournament on twenty-sixth of August at Mexico against Cruz Azul with the home game set for the third September at Jalapa, Guatemala. In the meantime, the National under-twenty Team will participate in the qualifying round of the FIFA under-twenty World Championship set to blast off on September twenty-first at Guatemala and will conclude on September twenty-eighth. Belize has been grouped with Panama, Guatemala and El Salvador which means it’s a tough road for us to hoe.

Meanwhile, the Belize Female Football league kicked off its two game championship series on Saturday inside Dangriga as Delille Pumas hosted the number one seed and defending champions, Gentle Touch of Esperanza. We’re just five minutes into the confrontation when Kimberly Perez benefits off this defensive miscue to slice this ball into the near corner as Esperanza takes a quick 1-zip lead. Three minutes later the Pumas fire this corner kick that Eden Gentle should have handled, instead she bobbles the pill. Narilee Lambey pounces on it to tie the score at one apiece. The Gentle Touch Team regains the lead when Kimberley Perez fires with the right foot from off the left side. Rochelle Martinez is beaten again as the West goes up 2-1. Make it a 3-1 ballgame when Abbi Holiday comes up with the steal and beats everybody with a final push that shakes the net. In second half play Cynthia Salazar gets a chance to display her individual; skills but the left foot shot is high. The Griga team knows it’s getting late so Iris Sentano forces this shot that inches outside the sticks. Down the stretch Gentle Touch was able to contain the Delille offense as they go on to post the 3-1 big W in game one. Game two now shifts to Norman Broaster Stadium where Delille Pumas must win by a three goal margin or Gentle touch repeats as female champion.

Turning to the Cycling scene, we caught up with Jerome Williams of the Belize Cycling Association who gave us more details on the upcoming first ever Junior four stage Cycle Tour in Belize.

Jerome Williams, Belize Cycling Association
“We’re having this four day stage, the first ever junior tour in Belize starting the twenty-first to the twenty-fourth of August 2008. What happened, we have the seniors and the elites always get their tours—and the masters—but the juniors never get wah tour. We’re having Mexicans coming in, the Guatemalan team and a team from Canada. Starting next week Thursday we’ll do the first stage from RB’s Service in Orange Walk via the Boom route to finish in Acros. That’s stage one. Stage two, we’ll do the individual time trial through the Boom circuit. On Saturday we go to Belmopan to Middlesex and back to Belmopan. That’s right after the gap. Then on Sunday we come from Cayo to Acros in Belize City.”

In other cycling news, the Belize Rollers cycling enterprise presents High School and Primary School criterion races around Marin Parade this Sunday, August seventeenth. You won’t want to miss it Belize. Take a look at the future of cycling.

And finally, softball news. In action at the Rogers Stadium over the weekend in the Belize City softball senior and interoffice competition Brodies/MOE handcuffed the police 13-4, Central Bank bandaged KHMH 22-10 final score, Telemedia broke Belize Bank 14-3, Club 313 squeaked pass Trucker’s Posse 8-7 and Belize Electricity Limited outlasted Brodies/MOE18-12. On Monday’s schedule Trucker’s Posse goes up against Central Bank and the Belize Bank will do battle with the Police.
