Jonathan Williams carries Belize flag at opening of Olympics
Beijing’s National Stadium, also known as the Bird’s Nest, was packed with ninety-one thousand people for the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympics. The ceremony exploded with multi-coloured fireworks, prolific displays of Chinese culture, and coordination and precision all in the spirit of international good will.
President Hu Jintao said “The historic moment we have long awaited is arriving. The world has never needed mutual understanding, mutual toleration and mutual cooperation as much as it does today.”
The opening ceremony aired live on Channel Five at five-thirty this morning. If you were still snug in bed during the spectacular show, you still have another chance to see it. Here are some of the highlights of this morning’s Olympic coverage and be sure to look out for the Belizean contingency.

The games are scheduled to run from the eighth to the twenty-fourth of August. The athletes representing Belize are Jayson Jones who takes part in the two hundred meter; Jonathon Williams in the four hundred meter hurdles; Tricia Flores in the Long Jump; and Alfonso Martinez who represents Belize in the fifty-eight kilograms category in Taekwondo.
