Guatemalan woman finally has her day in court

The murder trial of a twenty year old Guatemalan woman was adjourned today in the Supreme Court. The trial has grabbed attention for various interesting aspects. Firstly, because the woman has been in prison for more than a reasonable time awaiting trial for lack of defense, and secondly, she was a juvenile when the crime was committed. The woman has been behind bars since July third, 2005 when the incident occurred in front of the King’s Lounge in San Ignacio. Dominga Hernandez, also known as Yanira Escobar, is being tried for the fatal stabbing of twenty-two year old Yesenia Salgero in a Sunday brawl at the club. The prosecution, led by D.P.P. Sheryl-Lynn Branker Tait is arguing that Hernandez admitted to stabbing Salguero, but the defense attorney Linsbert Wills is contending there is no weapon as evidence to show. The case resumes on Thursday.
