Two diplomatic appointments before the Senate

In news from the diplomatic front, there are two ambassadorial appointments that will seek approval from the Senate at its sitting tomorrow. Independent Consultant and former C.E.O., Kamela Palma, who served briefly at the Belize Embassy in Guatemala, is being proposed as High Commissioner to St. James Court in London to replace the current High Commissioner Lawrence Sylvestre who is expected back in Belize next month. The Government is also proposing businessman and former U.D.P. Deputy Leader, Oscar Ayuso, as Ambassador to the Holy See. This may be the last time that ambassadorial appointments will go before the Senate. Under the proposals to change the Constitution, appointments will be made with the stroke of the pen and will not have ventilation of the senators.
Similarly, the appointments of the Chief Justice, Justices of the Supreme Court and of the Court of the Appeal, will not require senate approval when the amendments become law. The Senate tomorrow will also seek to approve the budget for the 2008-2009 financial year, consisting of eight hundred and twenty-five million dollars which was debated last Thursday and Friday.
