Mayor’s attorney says it’s all power play between PM and Moya
And while Peyrefitte was more circumspect in his approach to the charges, last evening the Mayor’s other defense attorney, Hubert Elrington, was quite candid about her upcoming charge. Elrington thinks it’s all a power play between the Prime Minister and the Mayor.
Hubert Elrington, Defense Attorney, Mayor Zenaida Moya Flowers
“This is an intra-party squabble. I have been saying let’s see if good sense will prevail. Let’s see if a different approach would work. Why is the party tearing itself apart? I don’t think there’s one U.D.P. out there who loves the party, who wants good for Belize, who wants the Mayor and the Prime Minister to be at war. You know any U.D.P. who wants the mayor and the prime minister to be at war? I certainly don’t. The D.P.P. has indicated to us that under the Belize City Act and under regulations made under the act, she is going to instruct the police to charge the Mayor with three technical violations; not with stealing any money, not with making off with nay of City Council’s property, not with any act of dishonesty, nothing like that. But the technical offences where she said there was a regulation where she said you should have followed this procedure and you did not follow it therefore you committed an offence. So it’s the most technical of offences. After all the ballyhoo, after all the trial in public and making all these big allegations about City Council money gone, weh City Council millions deh, you these foolish charges? So you’re playing with the people of Belize then? You’re playing with our intelligence? Either the mayor stole or she did not steal. It is an attempt to flog the mayor publicly because she said you run Belmopan central government and I run Belize City and that’s how it is. I’m not your boy or girl.”
