Aero Dispatch tops B.W.S. in Interoffice basketball action

The Interoffice Basketball three game championship series exploded to life Friday night inside the Civic Center as the underdog B.W.S. Pressure faced off against the heavily loaded Aerodispatch Services and indeed the decided edge in favour of the Aerodispatch unit is signaled on the very first play as Kevin Gillett comes up with the steal and flashes down court to open the scoreboard. Of course, B.W.S. makes a living off pressure and Jamir Enriquez launches this three point shot to remind the opposition that it’s not going to be a walk in the park tonight. It’s more B.W.S. Pressure when Karim Thompson sinks the baseline jumper. He would throw up ten points in this outing. In fact, B.W.S. has spurted to a seven point lead when Charlie Dunk Armstrong lands this big three pointer for Aerodispatch. Charlie Dunk would total a team high of eighteen points. Nevertheless, at the end of the first quarter the water people show an 18-10 lead. We’re in the second quarter play when this three by Ronald Alarcon cuts the Aerodispatch deficit to three points. Alarcon would add twelve points to his team total. Kurt Burgess, the big man for Aerodispatch then gets the pill in his office and he strikes for two of his twelve game points. They were looking to run away, that is Aerodispatch, when Jamir Enriquez lands another big three pointer. Enriquez would score the game high of twenty-three points. At the half Aerodispatch is only down by a single point.
In the meantime people, the third quarter will go down as the lowest scoring by any two teams this season as Kelvin Gillett gets two of Aerodispatch’s nine quarter points. B.W.S. only scored six points which allows Aerodispatch to show a 42-40 edge at the eighty-three. Folks, in the fourth Aerodispatch finally blows the contest wide open. Kelvin Gillett goes for two in traffic and earns three the old fashioned way. For Floyd Talbert the third time is the charm as he stays with it to get three points for his team. Kurt Burgess then hammers home this opportunity to keep the Aerodispatch run going. Aerodispatch services go on to post the 64-53 big W to grab game one. Game two of this series is set for Wednesday, seven-thirty p.m. at the Civic Center. You won’t want to miss it.
In the pre-game on the ticket the Interoffice All Stars took on the champion of the Christian Basketball League, M&M Promise Keepers. Edward Baptist of Central Bank Jabirus came up with twenty-five points and Ashley Hemsley had a two doubles of sixteen points and twelve rebounds, they lead the All Stars in a 58-54 big W over the M&M Team. Erwin Orosco had twenty-two points and Andrew Robateau had eleven points and twelve rebounds in the losing effort fort he Christian Basketball League champions.
Now folks, here are the awards from this year’s Interoffice basketball league at he Civic. Salome Phillips is fan of the year, Rico Black of Tuff e Nuff three point shooter of the year, Frank August of Belize Healthcare Partners is top scorer with an eighteen point nine point average. Kelvin Gillett is assist leader with eight point five showing per outing. Lloyd Burgess averaged fifteen point six rebounds to lead the league. Ashley Hemsley had the most steals, Floyd Talbert emerged the defensive player of the year and most valuable player goes to Kenroy Usher of Belize City Council, who average sixteen points, five point six rebounds and two point nine steals in every game he played. We say congratulations to one and all.
Now here’s playing catch-up on the female Football Competition currently in session. In regular season play over the weekend Sugar city Girls edged Gentle Touch 4-3 at O.W. Delille Pumas was held to a 3-3 stalemate at Dangriga by Millennium of Belize City and Pomona Hidden Treasures really routed Cruz Azul 7-zip. Thus, so far three teams have made the post season, namely, Gentle Touch, Millennium Girls and Delille Pumas. A back match slated for Saturday at Trial Farm Orange Walk between Sugar City Girls and Pomona Hidden Treasures will determine which team completes the four team playoffs. Kimberly Perez leads the league in scoring at this juncture with fifteen goals
In other football news, Belize’s participation in the UNCAF inter-clubs championships this year finds F.C. Belize facing Punta Arenas of Costa Rica at Costa Rica on Tuesday, seventh August with the home game set for Thursday, sixteenth of August while Revolutionary Conquerors of Dangriga will take on Real Espania on Wednesday, eighth August at Honduras and face them at the Carl Ramos Stadium on Tuesday, fourteenth August.
In National Team news, the F.F.B. is inviting all players eligible to attend the training camps for the men senior team to compete in the South Africa 2010 FIFA World Cup eliminations. Camp begins on Wednesday, eleventh July. Make that move if you want to get in. now here’s a reminder that the UNCAF under sixteen tournament will be hosted in Belize City from seventeenth to twenty-third September so stay tuned.
In softball news, here are the results from play in the Belize City Senior and Interoffice Leagues over the weekend. Maria Chang Lady Rebels drilled Brothers Habet Diamonds 3-2, Belize Electricity jolted K.H.M.H. 17-1, Telemedia humbled Brothers Habet Diamonds 21-zip, Belize City Council prevailed over Telemedia 15-8, Central Bank crushed Truckers Posse 15-7, Truckers Posse came back to route K.H.M.H. 9-2, Maria Chang Lady Rebels roughed up Brothers Habet Diamonds 8-1 and the city council clobbered the Police 6-5. On tonight’s ticket at Roger’s Stadium Club 313 faces Brodies/Moe and Belize Electricity hooks up with Telemedia.
Checking the volleyball results from over the weekend, S.Q. Stars fell on Jaguars 22-25, 26-24, 15-12. B.H. Paint stung Lady Jaguars 25-22, 29-25, 25-14, 24-26 and 15-13. Team 313 to dispatch Belargo 25-16, 25-22 and Rebels had to go five to knock off Scorpions 25-22, 25-17, 26-28, 11-25, 15-13. On Thursday’s schedule Telemedia goes up against 313, Courts Social Club comes out to play with the Police and FirstCaribbean Diamonds take aim at Kauss.
Turning to the cycling scene, only eighteen riders were suited up at the Belmopan Comprehensive School yesterday for the fifty-five mile warm up race featuring only the elder statesmen of the sport. They had to be at least twenty-eight years old or older. At the Belmopan Circular the race heads south to the Sibun Bridge where they would swing back to head to the finish in front of Loma Luz Hospital in Santa Elena. By the time the pelathon reaches Armenia we’re already down to eleven riders in the lead pack. But at the turn around point on the Sibun Bridge it’s George Abraham hugging the curve first, leading a pack of thirteen riders. In the hills this three man unit of Quinton Hamilton, Leroy Cassasola and Glen O’Brien execute the breakaway that mostly determines the outcome of this event. And here is the trio skating around the Belmopan circular en route to Loma Luz. At the finish line Quinton Hamilton has more punch than his companions so he hangs on to first place in a time of five hours, fifty-four minutes. Leroy Cassasola of Santino, who mounted a challenge, settles for second while his teammate Glen O’Brien pulls up third. Meanwhile, there’s no battle for fourth place really. Orson Butler of Megabytes leads a trio to grab that position without fuss. Unattached, Kenny Gladden rolls in fifth while Stephen Bissett rounds out the top six.
