Price of butane goes up again
Last week we reported that government had set up the Basic Commodities Commission to deal with the spiraling cost of living, but today consumers have been hit with a huge hike in the price of butane gas. The increase approved by Cabinet has sent butane up by a whopping seven dollars for a hundred pound cylinder across the country. In Belize City one hundred pound cylinder is now selling at a hundred and thirty-two dollars, in Belmopan and San Ignacio at a hundred and thirty-four dollars, and in Benque Viejo at one thirty-five. In the north, the new price in Orange Walk is now one hundred and thirty-three dollars and in Corozal one hundred and thirty-two. Down south in Dangriga, butane is now selling at one hundred and thirty-six and in Punta Gorda at a hundred and thirty-seven dollars.
It is the third increase in butane in as much as three months and coupled with the recent increases in the prices of fuel, rice, beans, flour, bread and poultry, consumers are feeling the pain of the high costs in basic food items.
