Charges of obstruction against U.D.P. supporters dropped

The event received much publicity at the time because of the charged political climate, but today in Magistrates’ Court a charge of obstruction was dismissed against U.D.P. activist Goldburn “Easy Glen” Adolphus. Magistrate Sharon Frazer dropped the charge because the prosecution was not ready to proceed.
Last November, Adolphus was accused of obstructing police constable Abel Mendez in the execution of his duties in an incident last November when U.D.P. supporters attempted to cut down a political sign put up by the People’s United Party at the corner of Freetown Road and St Thomas Street. Another U.D.P. activist, James Suazo, who was also charged in relation to the incident, was freed of two counts of Aggravated Assault when his charges were dismissed. One of the complainants, P.C. Elijio, did not appear in court, while the other complainant, Corporal Darrell Usher, told the Court that he did not want to bring any charges. Suazo was charged with two other counts of Aggravated Assault of Superintendent Chester Williams and Inspector Christopher Noble. These charges were dismissed on May twenty-second when Williams and Noble failed to appear in Court. Adolphus, Suazo and two others, Peter Castillo and Steven Bain, were additionally charged with Damage to Property for P.U.P. election campaign signs in the Freetown constituency on January tenth. These charges were also dismissed. Attorney Michael Peyrefitte represented the defendants in all the cases.
