Committee to Protect Journalists indicated embargo should go

Carlos Lauría

When the Committee to Protect Journalists was created almost thirty years ago, there were grave violations against the press, especially in Latin America, when the region was ruled by military dictatorships. The organization headquartered in New York, covers the planet in the protection of press freedom. On Thursday night, the CPJ’s Senior America’s Program Coordinator, Carlos Lauría. said that in a democracy, the media should not be interfered with.  Tonight Lauría says the embargo against Channel Five does not auger well for the government.

Carlos Lauría, Senior Americas Program Coordinator, Committee to Protect Journalists

“The Committee to Protect Journalists or CPJ is an independent nonprofit freedom press organization that defends the rights of journalists to report the news freely without fear and promote freedom of expression around the world.”

Jose Sanchez

“Mr. Lauria, would you say that freedom of the press is one of the hallmarks of democracy?”

Carlos Lauría

“Definitely. Without a free press, society is not, cannot be informed about issues that affect the daily lives of citizens. Freedom of expression is enshrined in most of the political constitutions of the countries and it is the fundamental of human rights. All citizens have the right to be informed. I firmly believe it is vital for democracy. End this embargo against the channel and allow officials to talk openly with reporters because they need to do the work. There are going to be times that the official word is not going to be out there because the officials are taking this position which is not really a constructive and is really something that should be avoided.”
