James Adderley has the latest in sporting news
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and we’re certainly glad that you could join us for this rush of Sports Monday. Week eight in the Belize Bank Super League took us to Dangriga where the defending champions Valley Renaissance were attacked inside the Carl Ramos Stadium by the Placencia Assassin. In fact the visitors left no doubt they were deadly serious when Garcia heads this ball to Jason Westby who squanders the opportunity with a mis-timed strike. However, Westby quickly makes amends when he beats the Valley keeper to this floater inside the danger zone and his header gives Placencia a 1-zip lead just like that. At the other end it’s Raymond Marin who gets the chance to equalize for the Valley but this left foot offering won’t get the job done. In the meantime, slip goes most of the time and this time Ernest Garcia pays the ultimate price by gifting this ball to Alexander Peters who ties the score thirteen minutes in. a few minutes later, Leonardo Valdez makes a bid to give the Valley the lead with this monster blast that brings out the best in goalkeeper Stephen Lopez. Folks, it’s Jason Westby of Placencia at it again. He outruns the defense, beats the keeper but fails to find the hole. Valley Renaissance then goes to the set piece looking for a goal and it’s a nice low cruise missile unleashed by Alexander Peters that misses the target. Now here’s the big question, did Peters earn a penalty on this push at the goal? We’re not certain while the referee certainly didn’t think so. For sure Peters is the go to guy for the Valley in this outing and it’s only the timely intervention of Stephen Lopez that prevents Peters from scoring his second.
We’re in second half play when Byron Perez picks out Rayon Brooks who fails to deliver the goods from point blank range. Dalton Eiley then tries to give the Assassin the lead with this swing but it’s an easy save for Anthony Requeña. Placencia continues to press the action with this center from off the set piece but while it creates a half chance for Westby, Anthony Requeña wins the clash of bodies. It’s getting late so Jason Santos of the Valley attacks from off the right wing only to see Stephen Lopez smother the attempt to push the ball across the goal mouth. The Valley then looks to steal the W off this set piece triggered by Jason Kelly but it’s right at the keeper. When the whistle sounds it brings the curtain down on a 1-1 affair.
In other action around the league, Kraal Road shook up Texmar 2-1, Paradise Freedom Fighters pounded Santa Elena Synergy 3-zip, while Hattieville F.C. burned Cayo South United in a 3-2 finish. The Sunday match between San Felipe and San Pedro was postponed. Looking to week nine, the schedule begins on Saturday when Santa Elena visits San Pedro. On Sunday Kraal Road returns to Hattieville, San Felipe travels to Cayo South, Texmar will host Placencia and Valley Renaissance will be at home against Paradise Freedom Fighters.
In billiards news, the Nine Ball Three Man Team Tournament being presented by the Belize Billiards Association will kick off this Sunday, fourth October at Vikings Club in Belize City. The winners take home one thousand dollars, three trophies and twenty cases of Belikin Beer. Second place gets five hundred dollars, three trophies and ten cases of beer and an MVP trophy will also be awarded from this tournament.
Finally folks, we must mention the fourteenth CODICADER Tournament recently concluded in Costa Rica has exposed Belizean sports in a most negative way. Our best performance came from National Secondary School’s Volleyball females champion St. Catherine Academy who finished with three win, three loss record. In basketball male champ Sadie Vernon won two, lost four while female champ Gwen Liz won one and lost four including a hundred point loss to Guatemala. In football the national champ lost three straight including a 21-nil defeat to Guatemala. Athletics and karate did not produce any medals. Now make no mistake for certain we can’t blame the youth who were dashed into the lion’s den. You see people if we don’t set standards and do the necessary scouting and training we’ll wind up just like this every time; clobbered, disrespected and the butt of all kinds of jokes. As I say, heads should roll.
That’s it for now. We invite you back same time, same place, next week. Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
