Six to compete in Miss Big and Beautiful pageant
For the past three years, beauty and talent has graced the stage in a whole new style with bigger women who show off themselves at the Miss Big and Beautiful pageant. This Friday night at the Bird’s Isle, the six contestants for 2008 will engage in another such competition. It’s all geared toward fun and excitement, but according to Coordinator, Marina Welcome, there’s also a deeper purpose than flaunting behind the event.
Marina Welcome, Coordinator, Miss Big & Beautiful Pageant
“This year’s pageant is much more better than last year’s pageant. The girls, the way the girls do the thing on the edge and buddy, buddy, buddy. And we have a new segment this year; we have a lingerie segment with the bath suit. So they have something nice and good to look forward to and they don’t have to worry about any seating problem because Bird’s Isle is much bigger and I assure everybody that there will be a seat in there for them.”

“But the requirement is that they are big right?”
Marina Welcome
“Yes, they are big and trust me the girls are big and beautiful and they can flaunt their beauty.”
Marion Ali
“There is a serious reason behind such a pageant right?”
Marina Welcome
Yes, the money that we make from the pageant goes towards the carnival costumes. As you know everything is hard this year. They had even broken into my house, stole some of the prizes and I went downhill but I’m right back up again because they won’t keep me down just like that. So the money from the pageant goes to make the children’s carnival costumes.”

“For which group?”
Marina Welcome
“For Jump Street Posse.”
The first place winner will receive a thousand dollars cash. All ladies will receive prizes and new Miss Photogenic, Miss Congeniality will be picked. The contestants vying are: Sherisia Reneau, Cindy Rowland, Rhonda Burgess, Darlene Whitfield, Jennifer Wade, and Kiwana Williams. Each contestant will represent a Caribbean country on the night of the pageant. Tickets are available from contestants and at the Port Loyola Health Centre for five dollars for children and ten for adults and fifteen for reserved seats.
