Administration Building in Belmopan named after Sir Edney Cain

The Administration Building in Belmopan has a new name. In ceremonies this morning Prime Minister Dean Barrow cut the ribbon, officially renaming the office complex Sir Edney Cain Building. Cain, who passed away in January of this year, was a career public officer. He joined the government service 1940 and served in several capacities including Accountant General, Financial Secretary, and High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. Cain was also the first Governor of the Central Bank and Belize’s first resident ambassador to the United States. According to Prime Minister Dean Barrow, Cain was an outstanding Belizean and public officer.

“While his public service career was what ultimately defined him, we need to recollect that he was pone of the most distinguished Belizeans of the last century. Edney was, in the truest possible sense of the term, a renaissance man. In other words, while he was particularly distinguished by his ability, talent and record in the field of economics, in the field of accounting, remember that he was also one of our foremost poets. He was a lover of literature and the arts. He was a musician. He was, in other words, accomplished across the board. Everything that he did was informed by his commitment, honesty, integrity and principle and that I think is the kind of legacy that any of us would be proud to take to the grave.”

Sir Edney was knighted in 1986. Present for the ceremony was Sir Edney’s widow, Lady Leonie Cain.
