Belize butchered in Monterrey in 7-nil blow-out

Game two of the World Cup Qualifying series between Belize and Mexico unfolded at the Estadio Universitario in Monterrey, Mexico Saturday night and after losing the home game at Houston, Texas two nothing, Belizeans worldwide certainly felt encouraged going into Mexico. however, that enthusiasm took a big hit when seven and a half minutes in Carlos Vela opened the score with his second goal of the series to give the home team a quick one-zip lead. Three minutes later Andres Guardado gets this chance at goal but lets Shane Orio off the hook. In fact, the superiority of the Mexicans, particularly in the ball possession category, becomes clear and indeed except for the heroics of goalkeeper Shane Orio, things could have gone south rather quickly. Belize, take a look at the play that our team couldn’t defend; the center from off the wing in front of the goal mouth. It would lead to our demise. Goal number two comes at the thirty-third minute when Guardado beats his man atop the eighteen to unleash this shot that ricochets off Ian Gaynair and bounces into the net. Let’s just quickly say thank you to Shane Orio who was asked to take care of more than his fair share in this particular outing. Belize looks to strike back as Deon McCauley aims at the far post only to come up short. We’re into injury time in the first half when Fernando Diaz Arce finds open space in the Belize defense to make it a 3-zip ballgame at intermission.
In the meantime, if one had been hoping that Team Belize would have regrouped during half-time, one would have been sorely disappointed when Fernando Arce is the recipient of the wing pass to make it a 4-zip deficit. Jared Borghetti, fresh off the Mexican bench, comes in to launch this header that gives Mexico a 5-zip lead sixty-three minutes in, his second of the series. Here is Belize’s best chance at the consolation goal of the series poeple, only McCauley simply doesn’t get enough of the ball. Folks, we’re into injury time when Borghetti benefits from a wing pass to make it a 6-zip score. And on the next offensive push he scores with the left foot for the hat trick and his series leading fourth goal. More importantly, Mexico eliminates Belize 9-zip in two outings. To put it bluntly Belizeans, our team was simply overmatched skill wise, cerebrally and physically. Still we made it to the second round and that is history and we’ll have to settle for that now as we look to the future.
In other football news, results from play in the Belize Female Football League shows that Delille Pumas of Dangriga downed Sugar City Girls 4-2, Millennium Girls of Belize City blanked Belmopan’s Cruz Azul 7-zip while Gentle Touch of Esperanza dished out 16-nil to Pomona’s Hidden Treasures.
Turning to the basketball scene, Game one of the Christian Basketball League Championship Series got off at the Civic Center Saturday night between Open Door Saints and M&M Promise Keepers. In a close ballgame the Promise Keepers got a game high twenty-four points from Jason Lamb, twenty-two from Ervin Orosco and seventeen from Andrew Robateau to post the Big W. Open Door Saints made a fight of it but got dropped mostly in the fourth quarter on a 20-14 score. Beyan Young got twenty-two points and Jerome Ellis twenty-one in that loss. Game two now comes up this Saturday inside the Civic Center.
On the Interoffice scene over the weekend, .B.W.S Pressure blew out Milo Fortifiers 54-45, Belize City Council crushed Belize Healthcare Partners 89-55, Port of Belize sailed past K.H.M.H. 58-28, Belize Telemedia unplugged Angelus Press 84-49. On tonight’s schedule at the Civic B.W.S. battles B.T.L., Atlantic Bank faces Home Protector/Tropic and Aero Dispatch services comes out against Angelus Press.
In bodybuilding news, the fight for the prestigious title of Mr. Musclemania 2008 proved to be an intense competition with finely chiseled bodies jockeying to get the attention of the judges. When the decision comes down Edwin Ramirez returns to the head of the class, Deon Anderson, the reigning Mister Belize settles for second while Michael Buckley up and coming rounds out the top three. Meanwhile, the battle in the Female Body Figure open competition boiled down to a showdown between Kayla Myvette and Arlene Welch. We must compliment both finalists. Still it’s Kayla Myvette with the title in 2008 while Arlene Welch settles for the runner-up spot. We say congratulations to both.
Checking in on the cycling scene, thirty riders signed up for the Santino’s three day Points Tour for cat four and five riders over twenty-eight years old which concluded yesterday and we join the finish yesterday as a seven man sprint streaks to the tape to finish it all. It’s Leroy Cassasola of Santino’s with the stage win and it’s enough to give him and his team top honours. Kenny Gladden gets the trophy and the green jersey for his Mountain Climbing ability in this tour, Jack Sutherland finished fifth overall, Kenneth Butler, that wild veteran, stepped up to fourth place, Roque Matus, owner of the M&M Tour, picked up third place, Big Eddie Usher rode his way into second overall, while Leroy Cassasola gets the win and the Yellow Jersey and we say congratulations.
In other cycling news, the Association’s Saturday race saw Byrone Pope grab top honours, Geon Hanson second, Darnell Barrow third, Brandon Cattouse fourth, while Allen Castillo rounds out the top five.
