Rotary looking for actors
In the next couple of months, the Belize Rotary Club will be bringing its fifth theatre production “Oliver and the Genie” to the stage. The proceeds of the plays are the biggest fundraiser for their Gift of Life programme, which allows children with serious heart conditions access to medical care abroad. But this year, the club is giving Belizeans interested in performing an opportunity to audition for a role in the Patrick Brown play. According to Rotarian, Sandra McKay, previous experience is not a must.
Sandra McKay, Chair, Rotary P.R.
“From you hear Oliver and the Genie, one of the roles we have to fill is the one Oliver plays and of course we have to rename the production because Oliver is not going to be in it. But we will need about four persons, male and female. Jamie Thompson is our director and he is prepared to use females where maybe in Jamaica where they had used males and vice-versa. But the Oliver role will be a male person. So filling about eleven main cast member roles and then also looking for persons who just want to dance or who may just want sing to do some of the group segments of the production. So anybody can come tomorrow evening at St. Catherine’s and perhaps you will get the part to be in the next Rotary play.”

“When is the play slated to go on stage?”
Sandra McKay
“We are looking at August eighth, ninth, and tenth and persons will have to be prepared to sacrifice maybe Mondays to Thursdays between now and that date as rehearsal evenings. For the most part, we are trying to keep it between five-thirty and eight-thirty each evening. So It might sound like a heavy commitment, but it’s only for a short time and at the end of the day think about the difference you are going to make in the lives of so many of the Belizean children who need our help.”
The auditions start at six Wednesday evening at the St. Catherine Academy auditorium. According to McKay, they are in the process of establishing a formal Rotary Theatre Company.
