Man accused in grenade assault maintains innocence

Story PictureHe is one of two brothers accused in the brutal grenade attack on Mayflower Street but today twenty-year-old Kareem Smith continued to maintain his innocence to the charge. Smith appeared before Magistrate Sharon Frazer this morning to have his bail revoked. In October, Smith was charged with two counts of Robbery and as a condition of his bail, was to stay out of trouble or in her words, not get arrested again. But when Smith was arraigned on Friday for Conspiracy to Commit Murder in connection to the grenade assault, Chief Magistrate Margaret Gabb revealed that the accused had in fact been arrested five consecutive times since October but that fact had been lost on the police prosecutors. Confronted by the truth, Smith had to accept that Frazer had no choice but to revoke his five thousand dollar bail and he has been ordered remanded until July tenth. But during the proceeding, Smith professed his innocence to Frazer, insisting that while he may be known as a thief, he’s not a violent criminal. But as the judge told him “Me no know yoh so, but dah no me wah have to prove the charge against yoh.” The accused says while he cannot swear for his brother, maintains that he only went to the Conscious Youth Development Posse to help investigators, not to be charged. Smith’s talkative mood continued outside the courtroom.
