Paving of city streets continues …

Story PictureThe dry season may make us uncomfortable with heat and dust but that weather is a blessing for public works projects. And while they were a little slow off the mark, the Belize City Council is trying to make up for lost time … as News Five’s Marion Ali reports.

The aesthetics of Logwood Street and its immediate environs improved today when the Belize City Council paved that eight hundred foot long lane. The upgrade, according to Belize City Mayor, Zenaida Moya, was long overdue.

Zenaida Moya, Belize City Mayor
“We have literally patched this street tirelessly and we felt that you know what, that is the last time, we need to pave it. And the people literally came to us, including the owner of La Popular Bakery. He had also even committed to put up a little money towards it.”

Citizens have also been patiently anticipating the resurfacing of other streets and Moya says the Council is addressing these concerns in its final year in office.

“We have also the Central American Boulevard, we have the North Front Street, we have of course Albert and Regent Street, Jane Usher Boulevard, Neal’s Pen Road, several of them. We also want to do Ebony Street simply because a lot of the traffic could be diverted onto Ebony Street over a bridge, noh.”

While no bridge is necessary for the downtown project, that work has been taking longer than anticipated. But Moya assures that the upliftment will come before the rains do.

Zenaida Moya
“It’s what has been asked of us. Two weeks extra to ensure that the work is done by the Belize Water Services Limited in terms of the extra work that needs to be done. So two weeks is what they have asked for extra and we’re giving them that two weeks. The project will be completed by mid-June.”

But while the Council has gotten off to a late start in addressing street repairs, Moya says there are legitimate reasons.

Zenaida Moya
“Now we have the support of the central government. They have been very good to the Belize City Council and by expansion the people of Belize and so with their support we’re getting a lot more done.”

The paving of Logwood Street is budgeted at around thirty thousand dollars. Marion Ali for News Five.

After Logwood Street, this afternoon the Council also paved Teachers Street in the West Landivar area.
