Security guard shot during struggle with armed robbers
A security guard is hanging onto life tonight after he was shot on the job at a Belize City supermarket on Monday night. Forty-seven year old Philip Garoy of J.B’s Security was shot in the neck after a struggle with a gunman at Twin Supermarket on Saint Thomas Street. Store owner, thirty-four year old Robert Chang, told News Five that shortly before closing time at nine o’clock three men rode up to the store from the direction of Princess Margaret Drive. The one with the gun ordered Chang’s father, John, who was sitting outside, to go into the shop. Once there, they focused their attention on Garoy, who was standing at the door. The gunman pointed the gun at Garoy, who began to struggle for the weapon. However, in the course of his resistance Garoy was shot in the neck. The men then sped off on their bikes without taking anything. None of the customers inside were harmed and Chang has since handed over surveillance video tapes to police for review. Garoy remains in critical condition at the K.H.M.H. and is unable to speak. Meanwhile, police have no leads as yet and continue to investigate.
