Hit and run kills Cayo man

Separate weekend accidents in Cayo and Corozal have caused a death and left three persons injured. Around two-fifty on Sunday morning police received a call that an injured man was lying along the Bullet Tree Road. When they arrived on the scene, police found fifty year old Gustavo Manzanero suffering from injuries to the head and foot. Manzanero was rushed to the San Ignacio Hospital but died while receiving treatment. Police believe the Bullet Tree resident was a victim of a hit and run and are currently seeking the driver.

Two other persons were injured on Sunday evening when a Geo Prism and Toyota Corolla collided on the Western Highway. Around five-thirty, twenty-three year old Maribel Gonzalez was driving towards Benque in the Prism when between miles sixty-nine and seventy, she collided head-on with the Corolla travelling in the opposite direction. While Gonzalez suffered no major injuries, two occupants in her vehicle, thirty-seven year old Doris Gonzalez and fifty-eight year old Esther Gonzalez, were transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in serious condition. The U.B. Student reported to police that the Corolla swerved into her lane and when she tried to avoid it by going into the other lane, the vehicle went back to its proper side of the road, causing the crash. Authorities have been unable to ascertain if alcohol was at the root of the accident as the other driver fled the scene. Police, however, say they have a suspect and expect to make an arrest before the end of the week.

Meanwhile in Corozal, sixty year old James Gegg reported to police that around seven on Saturday night he was driving his Dodge Caravan on the Santa Rita Road when he collided into the right side of a car driven by Adelita Waldman. According to Gegg, the accident occurred when Waldman failed to stop at the junction after coming out of Potzal Road. Gegg’s sixty-one year old wife, who was in the vehicle at the time, received minor injuries to her knees and complained of chest pains. Waldman, who abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene after the incident, has been served with a notice of intended prosecution.
