Cayo teen sentenced to 15 years for fatal stabbing

Story PictureHe was only fifteen years old when he killed another teenager but today a Cayo youth was sentenced to spend fifteen years behind bars for the crime. Eighteen year old Steven Manzanero was found guilty of Manslaughter last week in connection to the March 2005 death of Levi Quewell. In court today, his attorney Hubert Elrington argued that his client has shown remorse and is receiving psychiatric care as he comes to terms with the consequence of his actions. Valeriano Quewell also addressed the court today, telling Justice Herbert Lord that his son’s death has greatly affected his family as the deceased had promised to help his parents care for his three younger siblings. The maximum penalty for Manslaughter is life in prison but following those statements and consideration of the fact that this was Manzanero‘s first offence, Lord opted to hand down a sentence of fifteen years in jail. Manzanero and Quewell were both at a fair at the Macal River Park in San Ignacio when the two began to fight. During the altercation, Manzanero stabbed Quewell in the left side of the abdomen. He died as a result of the wound the following day.
