Millennium Girls top Pomona Hidden Treasures

Story PictureGood evening I’m James Adderley and we do welcome you to this segment of Sports Monday.

The Female Football League presented a full schedule over the weekend so we caught up with the M.C.C. clash between Hidden Treasures of Pomona and the home team Millennium Girls staged yesterday. The city team uses the home field advantage to pounce early as Gianne Cayetano centers to Gail Castro who should have done better with this chance. At the other end Ashanti Velasquez gets this run at goal only to be thwarted by good defense. Shenell Gentle of Millennium then displays her considerable football skills with this nice move but the finish is lacking. Again, it’s a nice show of ball control by the Millennium Girls until Kurshen Pollard is stopped by Tikei Swazo. Respect to Pomona’s Jacqueline Arzu whose great strength gets her a chance at goal that is shut down by Festina Velasquez who pays the price but would continue and we’re scoreless at the half. When play resumes Pomona goes to the set piece triggered by Ashanti Velasquez who puts the launch much too close to the keeper Festina Velasquez. It’s getting late in the ballgame when Kurshen Pollard moves a crowd to find Shenell Gentle and Millennium Girls get onto the scoreboard for the 1-zip lead. Millennium Girls go on to register the 1-zip big W over Pomona in week two.

In other action around the Female Football League, Sugar City Girls of O.W. blanked Cruz Azul of Belmopan all of 5-zip while Gentle Touch of Esperanza was jolted by a 2-1 score from Delille Puma’s at Dangriga. This week’s schedule finds Delille Puma’s travelling to Sugar City Girls on Saturday. Sunday Cruz Azul will host Millennium Girls at Belmopan while Pomona Hidden Treasures head to Cayo for its date with Gentle Touch.

In billiards news, the Hi5 Sports Pub and Deli presents the first ever three man Nine Ball National Tournament on may twenty-fifth and twenty-sixth respectively. An entrance fee of a hundred and eighty dollars per team is being levied with closing date set for may eighteenth. After that it’s gonna cost more. The winning team takes home fifteen hundred dollars, second prize is seven hundred bucks and third prize gets three hundred dollars. To get in, contact telephone numbers 610-3143 or 610-0914.

In track and field news, we say congratulations to Ezekiel Usher who participated in the NYRR Brooklyn Half Marathon on May third inside the U.S., finishing the thirteen point one miles in a time of one hour, twenty-six minutes, fifty-six seconds to place sixth in the masters class which feature one hundred and ninety-two runners and two hundred and thirtieth overall out of the more than four thousand that started. The next half marathon is set for September at Staten Island U.S.A. and we say to Ezekiel Usher, do it again.

Turning to the basketball scene, the Shine Your Light Christian Basketball League continued to rule at Big Bird’s Isle with two big matches on Saturday. We caught up with the confrontation between Open Door Saints and Horizon as Bradford Petters provides a big tre for the Horizon. The reply for the Saints comes from Jerome Ellis who strikes for three of his nine game points right here as they lead 16-19 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter action Horizon gets busy. George Tillett finds his sweet spot to hit nothing but cotton. The Saints come right back with this interception by Jacob Leslie who takes it all the way to mash the pill home with emphasis. Jonathan Vellos then steps up for three the hard way; Vellos would lead Horizon with twenty-six points, the only double digit scorer for his team. That’s according to the score sheet. And at half Open Door Saints show a one point lead. However, in the third quarter the Saints do explode. Jacob Leslie goes glass for two of his game high twenty-seven points. This is nice ball work from the Saints as Leslie streaks in for two to further extend the lead. Byron Young then makes his contribution with this blanker; he would finish with eleven points. No doubt Jacob Leslie is a force in this Christian league as he goes for two more points. Open Door Saints would score twenty-five points to Horizon’s ten in the third quarter, blowing the game wide open and would go on to post the 69-53 big W.

In the nightcap on this ticket at Bird’s Isle on Saturday, Sandhill blew out Lake I Baptist 68-46 with Marvin McKoy putting up a massive thirty-two points, Glenford Davis helped with eleven points in the W while Barrington Sutherland contributed ten. For Lake I Baptist Darwin Prince was outstanding with the game high of thirty-four points but in the loss.

In other basketball news, the Interoffice Tournament is set to blast off next Friday, May twenty-third inside Belize Civic Centre with eighteen teams registered, including the defending champions Belize Telemedia Limited. An important meeting for all eighteen teams is being staged at the Belize Civic Centre conference room six-thirty p.m. Wednesday, May fourteenth.

Finally folks, Unity edged Reggae Boys 46-45 in the finals of the Brannon Brothers Memorial Marathon presented yesterday at Big Bird’s Isle. Eight teams participated and we do say to the organisers: good show.

Hey, that’s it for now though. We invite you back same time, same place, next week. Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
