Millie Jackson to perform in weekend concert

Story PictureShe’s one of the hardest working women in show business and this weekend Millie Jackson will star in a special Mother’s Day concert in Belize City. News Five’s Kendra Griffith sat down with the international singer this morning for a preview.

Kendra Griffith, Reporting
In the over forty years that Millie Jackson has been on the music scene, the R&B singer has released over twenty albums, spawning numerous hits.

Kendra Griffith
“What has contributed to your staying power?”

Millie Jackson, Singer
“The fact that I’m in control. I take care of all my business myself, I’ve never had a manager and if I don’t want to do it, I don’t do it.”

And what Jackson wants to do is keep busy…

Millie Jackson
“I’ve done two plays, Young Man, Older Woman and the sequel. I’ve been on radio five days a week for the last ten years and I still go out and do concerts.
I’m getting ready to do a TV show. I have to do things, I am creative and I have to do more on and do other things, otherwise you get bogged down and get fat and all you do is sit in front of the TV and eat.”

In 2001, Jackson released her latest album, “Not for Church Folk” on her own record label.

Kendra Griffith
“You’ve had quite a number of hits, you have any favourites among them?”

Millie Jackson
“Loving Arms is one of my favourites and I see it seems to be one of the favourites out here. But my favourites are the songs, the nice clean songs that never got any airplay. Those are my … one that I did a couple years ago called “Standing on the Edge of My Life” love that song and on the new album, “Just leave me alone,” my favourite.”

And her Belizean fans will be able to hear her songs, both old and new, when Jackson takes to the stage at the Belize City House of Culture on Saturday night.

Anne Marie Williams, Concert Emcee
“She has legions of fans in Belize and Gwenneth Williams, who is actually the promoter under Bounce Enterprises loved her music so much that she decided to bring her. She’s here today and the show is actually Mother’s Day eve. It’s a wonderful opportunity for men to bring their mothers, husbands to bring their wives, sons to bring their mothers, their aunts, their nieces, everybody.”

Millie Jackson
“She get them in the house and I’ll send them home… hopefully happy.”

Tickets for the concert can be bought at CY’s Music, the Record Shack, or WIN-Belize for fifty dollars in advance and sixty at the door. Kendra Griffith reporting for News Five.

Millie Jackson memorabilia will be on sale at the concert.
