City Council receives donation for Battlefield Park

Story PictureThe present focus of the Belize City Council’s downtown rehabilitation efforts may be on paving Albert and Regent Streets but in the no-too-distant future Battlefield Park—which sits between those thoroughfares—will also be receiving a facelift. Today, in a brief handing over ceremony, FirstCaribbean International Bank presented a cheque for ten thousand dollars to get the ball rolling.

Zenaida Moya, Belize City Mayor
“The Council is very keen on ensuring that downtown Belize City is improved and this cheque will assist the Council in doing its part in ensuring that the Battlefield Park is in fact reconstructed at a level whereby the Belizean populace will be happy and feel contented going in there.”

Glen Smith, Country Head, FirstCaribbean Int’l Bank
“Each year at least one percent of our profits will be redistributed to the community through the sponsorship of community programmes. After we discuss it with the staff, cause we enlisted the max participation of our staff, it was decided that we do three projects and that the Lions cheque would go towards the City Council’s redevelopment effort of the Battlefield Park. In this regard, we are giving the ten thousand dollars for this project because we think that it will do a great deal in enhancing city centre. Belize City needs to be somewhere that is user friendly, as the mayor said in her speech and it is something that families can look forward to going to spend a few minutes or a few hours.”

The City Council is also working with different groups on an initiative to find shelter and care for those homeless people who frequent the park.
