N. Hway accident is second tragedy for Shipyard family

Police continue to investigate Thursday’s tragic road accident which claimed the lives of a husband and wife from the Orange Walk district. News Five has learnt that sixty-two year old Enrique and Halina Petkau from Shipyard were heading towards Orange Walk in their Kia Sportage when the vehicle collided head on into a Courts delivery truck driven by forty-four year old Elias Torres between miles twenty-six and twenty-seven, near Biscayne Village. The Petkaus died at the scene while Torres suffered injuries to his head and hand. The Chan Pine Ridge villager was transported to the K.H.M.H. where he is listed in a critical condition. Family members tell us that Enrique and Halina had travelled to Spanish Lookout on Wednesday to pay their respects to the family of Johan Thiessen, who was killed in a head-on collision on Sunday night on the Spanish Lookout Road. Following the funeral, the Petkau’s had decided to spend an extra day with the Thiessens before returning home on Thursday. This is the second time tragedy has struck the Petkau family as in June 2002, the prominent farmer from the Shipyard community, lost his first wife, Susanna when bandits attacked their home and shot and killed her.
