P.U.P. executive purports to meet; threatens Johnny
Their appeal to party leader Johnny Briceño for the calling of a meeting of the P.U.P. executive having fallen on deaf ears, fourteen members of that twenty-five person body decided to meet anyway without Briceño. It is not clear who chaired the conclave this morning at Independence Hall, but Deputy Leader Godfrey Smith was the highest ranking member present. A press release, after perfunctorily pledging the body’s full support for the new leader, went on to say that those elected in July of 2007 for a two year term will stay in their posts and if they are replaced, reserve the right to take legal action. The Briceño camp maintains that the special convention has the power to replace members of the executive, who should have resigned in any case as a courtesy following Briceño’s election to the top post. The convention will be held on Sunday in Orange Walk.
