Accused killer acquitted due to police impropriety

One of two men charged with the decapitation murder of a Lord’s Bank woman has been acquitted of the charge. Eighteen year old John Chessman walked out of the Supreme Court a free man after Justice Adolph Lucas ruled that a caution statement given at the time of his arrest and any other statement he made could not be admitted into evidence because Chessman was not advised of his constitutional rights. Lucas added that Chessman’s allegations of police beatings could not be dispelled. Chessman was accused of the June tenth 2005 slaying of Mara Noemi Garcia. The murder occurred at the home of Floyd Brown where Garcia worked as a domestic. It is believed the motive was robbery. Chessman’s co-defendant, nineteen year old Robert Gillett, pleaded guilty to Manslaughter on April third after the jury had already been empaneled. He will be sentenced on April twenty-ninth.
