We immediately head north to the People’s Stadium where Orange Walk United hosted Cayo South United yesterday week 5 of the Belize Bank Super League Tournament. At kick off time the host team wants to get back into the win column while the boys from the west are focused on vacating the cellar inside this football tournament.
We’re only 6 minutes in when disaster strikes for the visitors. Orange Walk’s Christopher Hendricks tries to slice this ball in front of the goal mouth but the ball hits the hands of Garret Bermudez, for which referee Pelayo rules a penalty kick.
Oliver Hendricks steps up for the execution and easily beat Shawn Lopez at the near post for the 1-zip OW lead.
Oliver Hendricks then gets this chance to make it a 2-nil but fails to get it done on 2 tries against Lopez.
It’s more pressure on Lopez as Oliver attacks off the left wing with this shot that bounces off the keeper who gets much needed assistance from his defense.
Cayo South does get the opportunity to equalize the ballgame on this individual effort from the caption Oliver Wiltshire, unfortunately the finish is lacking.
At the other end Christopher hooks up with his brother with this nice set and yes Oliver this should have been your 2nd goal of the match.
Oliver Hendricks gets another chance to make it 2-zip on this press only to be denied this time by the shills of goalkeeper Shawn Lopez.
At the 32nd minute Christopher Hendricks threads the needle to Gabriel Perez who pushes the OW lead to 2-nil.
Folks we’re 3 minutes into the 2nd half when Oliver Hendricks catches up with this lab into the danger zone and heads it home almost unchallenged to make it 3-nil for the OW team.
Just a few moments later the visitors get the perfect opportunity to pull one back when Lorenzo Diaz concedes this penalty.
Erique Tamai who scored both goals for Cayo South in the 3-2 defeat to City Boys least week is the designated kicker and guess what his penalty kick goes wide.
Noe folks watch this wonderful drop by Christopher Hendricks to Ian Chi who comes up with a perfect push into the back of the net as OW goes on to post the 4-zip big W.
In other action around the league, R.G. City Boys United continued its unbeaten run by doubling Placencia Assassin 2-1 at Placencia.
Griga United also remained undefeated by burning Paradise Freedom Fighters in a 3-2 affair inside the Carl Ramos while Hattieville Monarch come up big with a 4-zip bashing of Third World inside the MCC Grounds.
Going into week 6 the standings looks like this R.G. City Boys lead the league with a perfect 15 points, Griga Knights is next with 13 points from 5 outing. Paradise Freedom Fighters show 9 points at his juncture, Orange Walk United has 7 points, Hattieville Monarch 6, Placencia Assassin 4 while both Cayo South and Third World FC remain stalled at 1 point apiece.
This Sunday, April 3rd, it’s a clash of undefeated teams when R.G. City Boys plays host Griga Knights inside the MCC. Placencia Assassin gets a visit from O.W. United. Hattieville Monarch travel to Toledo for a showdown with Paradise Freedom Fighters and the battle of cellar dwellers will rage at Camalote football field when Cayo South United plays host to Third World.
Checking in on the Smart challenge 1st Division Tournament at the MCC shows that this Friday Yabra FC faces KHMH Authority and Atlantic Bank battles City Boys United.
In news from the BPFL, FC Belize edged Hankook Verdes 1-zip on Saturday while on Sunday San Felipe Barcelona took down the BDF in a 3-2 finish.
Now folks we head to capital city Belmopan where the buzz this Sunday morning is the 33rd running of the UB relathon and don’t you macho men think that this pre-race warm up by the females in just for show. In the previous 32 events, the males had won 17 and the females 15 including the last 2. the females start at Belmopan Market Square and cover 50 miles while the males, being males take off from the Police Station for 70 miles and well we’re with the females and the race in underway.
With the first mile completed we witness the passing of the baton and today we can tell you the sun is out in full force.
In fairness, we’ve got to show the males also struggling under the torrid condition, alleviated only by an intake of H2O.
And this picture simply reinforces our statement that the sun is a real factor today.
We fast forward to the finish and we find Clarencia Jones handing off to Justine Myvette.
Myvette in turn passes the baton to Tichele Solis for the final mile and guess what Tichele comes up with the best female mile this year with a time of 6 minutes 21 seconds.
More importantly she reaches the tape inside the ITVET compound ahead of any male runner to complete the female relation in 7 hours, 4 minutes as they pack up a 3rd win in a row with a total time of 7 hours, 4 minutes and now only trails the boys by 1. It’s Women’s month indeed. The males were timed at 7 hours, 6 minutes – 2 minutes off the pace with Bendicto Yatz boasting the best mile in 4 minutes 58 seconds. Hey girls you’re the boss in 2011 but it ain’t over till its over.
Meanwhile in more Women’s month news the Women’s Department staged its 1ts Rural Women’s Cricket Competition over the weekend featuring 7 teams. Flowers Bank beat Double Head Cabbage 44 runs to 21 in the final total the 1st ever female title and we say kudos to one and all.
In basketball news, Technical edged Muffles College 40 to 38 to take the U-15 title in the Orange Walk High School competition while at the U-17 level Technical knocked off Muffles 84 to 81 to force a final match scheduled for April 1st.
