Suspected electrical fire leaves soldier homeless

Four days after a massive inferno devastated Albert Street, fire fighters were back in action in the old capital over the weekend. Ann-Marie Williams reports.

Around five on Sunday evening, fire gutted the wooden house at number fifteen Daly Street in Belize City, leaving B.D.F. solider, Private Donovan Graham homeless.

According to the building’s owner Kevin Campbell, no one was at home at the time of the blaze. Neighbors notified Campbell of the situation and he immediately rushed to the scene.

“Did Mr. Graham manage to save anything?”

“No, nothing was saved. The fire actually didn’t get downstairs where we have some furniture stored but everything else was totaled.”

It took firefighters an hour to extinguish the flames which quickly consumed the forty-five year old structure.

“This is a building which is historic. I grew up there. I think it’s been there from the early sixties or seventies so pretty pine.”

Initial findings have led fire officials to suspect old electrical wiring led to the fire.

As for the destructive Albert Street fire, investigators are still shifting through the rubble in an effort to determine the cause of that blaze. Over the weekend, demolition crews blocked off Albert Street to break down the portions of the gutted structures that were in danger of collapse. Local insurance companies have yet to release the dollar amount associated with the fire but most estimates are in the millions.
