Ousted President Manuel Zelaya back in Honduras
In regional news, ousted President Manuel Zelaya returned to Honduras on Monday morning and sought refuge in the Brazilian Embassy in the capital, Tegucigalpa. His family and key advisors joined him at the Diplomatic Mission where electricity and water were disconnected. The de facto president, Roberto Mitcheletti, also extended curfew hours to prevent Zelaya’s supporters from demonstrating. By midday, hundreds had been detained and thousands had been chased away with tear gas by the security forces. The U.S. Embassy closed its doors. Zelaya says he had returned to store democracy. He was toppled on June twenty-eight and exiled to Costa Rica in a dispute over extended presidential terms. Brazil, the US and the OAS called for calm and restraint and the immediate restoration of Zelaya.
