Fire guts building and leaves family of 5 homeless

Story PictureAnd in Hattieville, a family of five set about their usual routine of getting ready for work and school after the long weekend, but found themselves homeless before they left the house today. The structure, which was owned by Lana Ahmad, was completely destroyed by a blaze that started from a iron left unattended by her son. Training Officer at the National Fire Service, Kenneth Mortis, told News Five that they responded to the call this morning but could not save Ahmad’s home.

Kenneth Mortis, Training Officer, National Fire Service
“This morning we received the call of a house fire in the Hattieville area. The team responded and extinguished it, after which the investigation commenced. We learnt that the building was owned and occupied by Miss Lana Ahmad and her family. Some time this morning, one of her older sons, Nadir, he was doing some ironing before he went to work. He works at the Hattieville prison and Nadir forgot to dis-plug the iron. It was probably some while after that one of the younger siblings observed smoke coming from the direction of his room. To make an attempt to gain entry into his room—the room was locked so forcible entry had to be made by the family members. But by the time this was done, they were overcome by smoke. So they had to evacuate the building. The fire then consumed the entire building, leaving the family now homeless.”

“What type of building was it; wooden, concrete and what size?”

Kenneth Mortis
“It was a mixed wooden/concrete with zinc roof type of building approximately sixty by thirty feet and it housed five bedrooms and three bathrooms.”

Delahnie Bain
“All the contents of the building, everything completely destroyed?”

Kenneth Mortis
“Yeah, building and contents totally destroyed. It is confirmed that the house nor the contents were insured but at this time the family is still piecing together the figures of their loss in terms of building and contents.”

The house was occupied by Ahmad, her husband and their three children.
