Viola Myles dies at age 105

Story PictureOne of Belize’s oldest citizens, Viola Myles, passed away at the Sr. Cecilia Home for the Elderly on Sunday morning. She was one hundred and five years old. Myles had been an active centenarian until late last year when she fell and broke her hip. We had made it a tradition to wish Myles happy birthday every year and last month Marion Ali had the honours.

Marion Ali
“What are you planning to do this year, your hundred and fifth year?”

Viola Myles, Dead at One Hundred and Five
“I no plan nothing. You know who is my planner? My great friend Jesus Christ.”

Marion Ali
“Ms. Viola what’s the secret? I mean, a lot of people woulda want live fi get half your age at least. Hundred and five years old, what’s the secret?”

Viola Myles
“No secret more than yo live right. No secret more than yo live right. And that’s all the secret, just live right, live for Christ.”

Marion Ali
“You have any advice for youngsters out here, people getting into trouble and all of that; dying young?”

Viola Myles
“I tired talk to them. And they tell me it’s ok Ms. Vi and tomorrow they go and do the same thing.”

We should point out that Myles did earn her crown because at the tender age of ninety-five, she beat out six other ladies to earn the Miss Y title. In 2006, she earned additional coverage when at a hundred and two, she fought off an armed attacker that broke into her home. Viola Myles, dead at a one hundred and five.
