WIN Belize publishes booklet on strong Belizean women
In another event connected to Women’s Week today WIN Belize displayed a quilt and circulated an accompanying booklet entitled, Quilters: A weaving of the Women’s Movement in Belize”. The publication features eight women who played their part in the struggle for basic rights.
Carolyn Reynolds, Executive Director, WIN Belize
“Some of these women, one of them in particular, was looking at getting land and housing for women who were experiencing domestic violence and so by being the leader in that and getting the women to be a part of that at the time helped to make these women build their self esteem. So that’s why we’re saying that by reading this booklet, by reading it, being inspired that young girls will look at how they can improve their lives.”
Florence Goldson, Prog. Officer, Public Info. & Research, WIN Belize
“ We all had stories to share about our grandmothers, great grandmothers, mothers and all these things that they had done and how they hadn’t accepted things, that they tried to fight and make a difference and so we thought that maybe if we highlighted some of these women and shared their stories with other people that then young women today would be inspired to stand up and fight as well.”
The booklet, Sponsored by HIVOS, is available free of cost at WIN Belize office at 28 Dean Street. Goldson says women in other eras will be highlighted in future works by WIN Belize. Today’s launching took place at The Art Gallery and Coffee Shop on Princess Margaret Drive.
