Convicted burglar will serve a year in jail

A Belize City man accused of burglary was convicted in Magistrate’s Court today but his sentence was an exercise in leniency. When nineteen year old Sheffield Ysaguirre appeared before Magistrate Sharon Fraser he pleaded guilty to breaking into Prosser Fertilizer’s North Front Street office and to handling goods stolen from Juanita’s and Caribbean Treasures. But following his confession, Fraser opted to give Ysaguirre two years suspended sentence for the Prosser incident and a fine of six hundred dollars or six months in jail for the Juanita’s transaction. While the goods from Caribbean Treasures earned him a year in jail, Fraser specified that the sentences are to run concurrently. That means that since Ysaguirre was unable to pay the fine, he’ll still only spend a year in jail for all three counts. While nothing was stolen from Prosser, a wallet, warm cap and a pair of white gloves were taken from Juanita’s and a laptop computer and digital camera were stolen from Caribbean Treasures. Following the burglaries, investigators recovered the items from separate buyers who testified that they came from Ysaguirre.
