Car crashes in Corozal; were 9 Salvadorans headed north?
Three people are hospitalised and seven others are in police custody tonight following a predawn road accident in the Corozal District. According to investigators, around four on Sunday morning officers on mobile patrol in San Joaquin village spotted a black Grand Marquis heading towards Libertad. The cops got suspicious when the car took off and a pursuit ensued. The chase ended when the driver of the car lost control and crashed in Calcutta Village. Unbelievably, crammed inside the vehicle at the time were ten people: a Belizean and nine Salvadorans. All of them were taken to the Corozal hospital for treatment but only three: the sixty-two year old Roaring Creek resident Cyril Wade, thirteen year old Joselyn Retana and thirty-five year old Nelly Herrera, have been admitted to ward. The other seven are in detention pending charges of illegal entry. Sources tell News Five that investigators are trying to determine if the undocumented immigrants were being trafficked through Belize en-route to the United States.
