Sports Guru, James Adderley, has the winning stats

Good Evening. I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.

In week 13 of the Belize Bank Super League Tournament, the red hot Orange Walk United hosted the always dangerous Placencia Assassins Saturday night inside the People’s Stadium as the mad scramble to make the 4 team playoffs intensifies. It’s the visitors with the first good look at goal and it comes off this corner kick that finds Brandon Torres whose header screams over the crossbar.

On the next press, this center gives Placencia another opportunity to score, but the header from Zerrick Torres rises over the goal. In the early goings, the Placencia Assassins emerges so the protagonist and this center into the goal by Dellon Torres provides a challenge for Charlie Slusher who gets a necessary hand on it. O.W. United finally gets smoothing going when Jarret Davis beats everybody to this ball including goalkeeper, Stephen Lopez—hits the near upright and gets a 2nd crack at it only to push the ball outside the stick. Jarret Davis then gets another chance to put his team ahead but winds up a step too late against goalkeeper Lopez. At the 41st minute, Kenny Canul inadvertently hands this ball inside the box for which the referee awards Placencia a penalty kick. The captain, Dalton Eiley sends Charlie Slusher the wrong way to give Placencia a 1-zip lead to take into intermissions.

We are into the 2nd half when Oliver Hendricks finds Christopher Hendricks who cannot keep his right away effort inside the box down. It’s more O.W. when Orrin Wade’s center almost forces Dalton Eiley into the dreaded auto goal but the ball inches outside the sticks. We’re 78 minutes in when Oliver Hendricks finds himself at the right time at the right place to smack this half volley past Stephen Lopez tying the ballgame at 1 apiece. Now check this out folks, with a minute remaining in regulation play, Charlie Slusher in his attempt to clear, simply gifts this ball to Ashley Torres who makes him pay dearly as he gives Placencia Assassins the 2-1 victory at Sugar City.

In other action around the league, R.G. City Boys bombed Griga Knights 6-zip at the Carl Ramos Stadium. Paradise Freedom Fighters blanked Hattieville 2-nil while 3rd World FC kept Cayo South with a 5-3 clubbing.

Thus with 1 game remaining, City Boys leads the league with 34 points and are headed to the 4 team playoffs as the #1 seed. O.W. United is next with 25 points and have made the post season, so has Paradise Freedom Fighters with 24 points and Placencia with 23 points are in but Griga Knights with 20 points could also rack 23 with a win in its final outing. Meanwhile, 3rd World FC now shows 13 points, Hattieville 8 and Cayo South, 2.

Griga Knights will look for the 3 points at the expense of O.W. United who they’ll host Saturday 7:30 p.m. at the Carl Ramos Stadium and they’ll be hoping Placencia Assassins losses to 3rd World FC on Sunday when they meet at Placencia. Paradise Freedom Fighters will host Cayo South on Saturday to close out regular season while RG City Boy finish against Hattieville inside the MCC Grounds on Sunday.

Deon McCauley leads the league in scoring with 22 goals—8 over his nearest challenger Oliver Hendricks who has 14.

Checking in on the Smart Challenge Cup, Brown Bombers beat West Lake on penalty kicks after a 3-3 finish on overtime to take a 1 game lead in the best of 3 series. Game 2 is set for Friday 7:30 p.m. inside the MCC Grounds.

In other football news, the final match in the 2 game series for the F.F.B.’s Delhard Courtney Cup was staged Sunday at the people’s Stadium where Suga City girls hosted Triple B’s who came in with a 2-zip lead from Game 1.  Sensing the urgency of the situation, Suga City attacked immediately, courtesy of Dalia Mai, only to be foiled by good goal tending from Idania Ramirez. At the other end, Sheridan Tracey benefits from this defensive error to get this look at goal only to unleash a high riser. A few minutes later, Rhonda Hernandez has this chance to put Triple B on the scoreboard, but fails to hit the target.

We’re in the 2nd half when Karen Garcia picks up this loose ball and pushes it into the far corner of the goal to give O.W. a 1-zip lead. This lead would hold up to the long whole, but it wouldn’t be enough as Triple B’s take it in a 2-1 aggregate score and we say congratulations to the champ.

In softball news, play in the Belize City completely saw Hurricanes wallop Orchid Blazers 10 to 3 on Friday and then on Sunday Mirage lady Rebels pounded Hurricanes in a 15-zip blowout.

In the cycling scene, Daniel Choto of Cayo High Road Cycling took Sunday’s Junior race in memory of Christopher Chuc in a time of 2 hours, 32 minutes beating out cross country winner, Joel Borland of Indeco by almost 2 minutes. Anfernee Young of Cayo High Road took 3rd, Darren Williams of D & D Consultancy finished 4th while Kyle Gentle of Cayo High Road rounds out the top 5 with a time of 2 hours 39 minutes 14 seconds in this 55 mile race.

Finally in basketball news, the national U-17 basketball team begins play today in the COCABA U-17 championship being staged at Costa Rica. Belize is grouped with El Salvador, México and Guatemala.
