Winners and losers of political conventions

A sea of blue flooded the west and the north of the country was covered in red on Sunday as both major political parties held divisional conventions. In San Ignacio, two People’s United Party candidates made a bid for Cayo Northeast. Orlando Habet topped the polls with nine hundred and eighty-six votes and is the new P.U.P. standard bearer in that constituency. His opponent, Nancy Juan Marin, was far behind with only two hundred and eighteen votes.

In the north, there were also two names on the ballot for the U.D.P. Corozal Southwest convention. The incumbent, Minister Gabriel Martinez, was re-elected to run on the U.D.P. ticket in the 2013 general elections. He garnered one thousand two hundred and seven votes, winning by a small margin over his challenger, Andrei Marin, who had one thousand one hundred and fifty. Thirteen ballots were spoilt, bringing the total votes to two thousand thee hundred and seven. The next U.D.P. convention will be in Orange Walk South on June fifth while the P.U.P. will also be holding conventions in June.
