Aurelio Martinez, Musician
“We have two days to concert because I have to go to the schools and talk about the Garifuna culture to children in the school. We have some workshops to talk about this culture. We have to give the power to young people, to the young generation. It’s very important because now I plan good music because maybe tomorrow we don’t have this crowd. The children, it’s very important to me to know about this culture so we have some workshop. In two days, we will bring artists from Honduras, my bass player lives in Boston now. We have to bring everything—this power—Laru Beya—the Garifuna song comes totally to this concert because it is very different. We have a different perspective to bring old Belize to NICH tonight. We have a big work to do. We have a special things to do in Belize to empower our countries in the culture because we lost the Garifuna culture. We lost it now and the Garifuna community around Central America, we have too much church talking about God and say to Garifuna people, [you] don’t have dance, don’t have to drink, don’t have to nothing. Like Andy Palacio said: “lyrics from Andy Palacio song.” So he asked for everything around the Garifuna culture. See the children lost it and I have to do this work to bring back the culture to the young generation. Tonight, the culture here in Belize is very special for me because I’m coming back home because Aurelio Martinez, he took off his international career from Belize, from here. Everything you hear on the internet, from facebook, is from here. This concert: Andy Palacio is on the stage—Garifuna years.”
