B.M.L. takes over S.E.L.’s CitCo contracts
Details are still sketchy but tonight it appears that Sanitation Enterprises Limited and the Belize City Council have parted ways. According to a press release issued this afternoon, city administrators indicated that Belize Maintenance Limited will assume the duties previously carried out by S.E.L. A year and a half ago the City Council was embroiled in controversy with both providers over the contracts shortly after elected representatives of the United Democratic Party took office. An agreement was eventually signed but tonight it appears the matter has reached a very different climax. The release goes on to state that the revised contract was formulated and agreed to by B.M.L. and S.E.L. and subsequently accepted by the City Council on the condition that the workers employed by S.E.L. will be inducted into B.M.L.’s labour pool. CitCo estimates that the new terms, which was finalised today, will save them at least three hundred and fifty thousand dollars annually and should result in greater efficiency in keeping the city clean.
