Accused child molester acquitted in Supreme Court
An accused child molester today walked out of the Supreme Court a free man. Thirty year old Mark Anthony Copius was charged with carnal knowledge of a child in 2006 after a child reported that two years earlier, when she was seven years old, Copius engaged in sex with her. The girl, who testified in camera, said she did not tell anyone earlier out of fear that she would be punished. Copius, who was not represented by an attorney, testified that he lived in the house with the girl’s family at the time but was innocent of any crime. The nine member jury of five men and four women deliberated for four hours before returning a verdict of not guilty. The vote was 7-2 in favour of the acquittal.
