S.S.B. inaugurates non-contributory pensions for men
They had to wait almost five years but on Wednesday, Belizean men finally achieved equality with women … at least in the eyes of the Social Security Board. The occasion was the launching of the non contributory pension for men sixty-five and over. Women who did not qualify for a regular Social Security pension began receiving their hundred dollars per month assistance in 2003. The ceremonies in Dangriga featured the awarding of cheques to the first fifty-five men enrolled in that town. In 2006, two thousand six hundred and twenty-seven women received two point two million dollars in non contributory pension payments and those numbers should nearly double this year with the inclusion of men.
